First Midwest Narrative
|
|
|
 | I travel a lot and like to share my often verbose
observations with family and friends. They are located around the world
as well as in many states of the USA. I may expand this to become a blog
in the near future, but this website will do for now.
My current position is with the University of
Hawaii at Manoa where I am involved in global economic and environmental
issues. Friends & family call me Jim, Jimbo or Barney, a name that has
been in my family since before the dinosaurs. Our most recent travel
(with Selena) was to America's Midwest, the
geographical origin of most of my family. I have attached four
illustrated narratives of this trip. |
 | First came Glenview, Illinois, near Chicago, for the
90th birthday celebration of a much loved and respected uncle. A
delightful and eventful family reunion also was included. |
 | Next, we visited Villisca, Iowa, the birthplace of my
mother, hometown of my grandparents & great grandparents, and
we paid
our respect at their graves. |
 | The third and fourth stops were in Wichita and
Osawatomie, Kansas. Another uncle, James Barney Marsh I, who died before
I was born, was a prolific bridge builder, based in Des Moines, and
contributed many Marsh or Rainbow Arch structures to these parts. The
surviving bridges are on the National Register of Historic Places.
|
 | Finally, we went to St. Charles, Missouri, a historic
small city near St. Louis. There are no Marsh Arch bridges, but lots of
other cultural and historical matters were there to enjoy.
